Alberti Lim Records Clean Sweep, Wins Five Consecutive IPRs for Client ASSIA

May 23, 2025

Alberti Lim recorded a clean sweep for client Adaptive Spectrum and Signal Alignment, Inc. (“ASSIA”), winning denial of institution of all five inter partes review petitions (“IPRs”) filed by Charter Communications’ challenges of the validity of ASSIA’s foundational patents. The IPRs are captioned in the Patent Office PTAB as Charter Communications, Inc. v. Adaptive Spectrum and Signal Alignment, Inc.

ASSIA’s patents are directed to innovative techniques for improving digital communications systems performance. ASSIA, led by inventor, Dr. John M. Cioffi, is known as a pioneer in innovation developing core technologies for Internet access and optimization. Dr. Cioffi is a Professor Emeritus at Stanford University and received, among many other accolades, the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, awarded by the President of the United States “for advancements that helped bring high-speed Internet to the world.”

“Winning all five IPR victories is quite an accomplishment, and we’re very happy for John [Cioffi] and the team at ASSIA,” said Alberti Lim partner David Alberti.

To secure the IPR victories for ASSIA , Alberti Lim co-counseled in the PTAB with attorneys from Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein & Fox, PLLC, with whom they have a strong relationship.  Opposing counsel representing Charter Communications in the district court case and related IPRs are Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, LLP, Greenberg Traurig, LLP, and Proskauer Rose LLP.
